USFWS APPROVES BOSS COPPER

USFWS Approved: A Win Bigger Than Boss

USFWS APPROVES BOSS COPPER

As most already know, a few months back a memo from the USFWS began to circulate online which seemed to challenge the legality of using our non-toxic copper for hunting migratory waterfowl. We were as shocked as anyone when we saw the position the Agency took as it seemed to undo a year’s worth of effort we were putting into clarifying the CFR’s while also working to have CuProX listed as its own specific non-toxic copper shot type on 50 CFR 20.21(j).

Without recounting the blow-by-blow of how this memo almost put us under and how we fought like hell to fix the problem, we want to take a moment and thank the people who helped deliver a win not only for Boss, but for the hunters, the USFWS and the environment. After months of meetings and communications, last Friday the USFWS delivered Boss with a letter clearly stating that our CuProX and Corrosion Inhibited Copper shotshells are approved for migratory bird hunting.

Our first call was to Congressman Bill Huizenga’s office. Bill has been not only a customer of Boss for several years but also a personal friend of mine. Bill and his team were instrumental in getting the word out with people at all levels within the DOI and FWS who immediately went to work on a solution once our issue hit their radar.

Next, Representative Addison McDowell of North Carolina’s 6th District and his staff immediately called to offer their help and pledged their support for Boss and teamed up with Bill’s office to foster creative dialogue with the Agency leadership.  Addison is also an avid outdoorsman and long-time customer of Boss.

As soon as Congressman Mike Thompson heard about what was going on, he and his team went to work supporting the cause. Mike has been a Boss customer for many years and has spent his life as an avid outdoorsman and has been an advocate for us hunters for over 36 years.

All of the Congressional support in the world would have never been able to untangle the bureaucratic mess our group sorted through if it weren’t for the team President Trump assembled to run the DOI and USFWS. Without diving too deeply into the dirty business of politics, we can confidently say this: The management team at USFWS appointed by President Trump diligently worked in conjunction with a small bipartisan group of Congressional representatives as well as our team and delivered a massive win for Boss, hunters, the USFWS and the environment. The genuine concern Director Brian Nesvik and Deputy Director Justin Shirley expressed and the speed at which they moved to deliver a solution speaks volumes not only to their character but also to their dedication to the USFWS and its core mission to protect the resources for all Americans to enjoy.

As we near the celebration of our Nation’s birthday, we hope this message reinforces the idea that while our government may not be perfect, it still can work as our founders intended.  As witnessed here, when people put party differences aside and work towards a common goal, great things can and do happen.  There is little doubt in my mind that The Great American Experiment will continue to work as designed for at least another 250 years.

We all have a little extra reason to celebrate this year.  Now that everyone knows our stuff is 100% legal, let’s rewrite the history books like we did with Bismuth but this time let’s do it with 100% American-mined and manufactured copper.

Here’s to a great kickoff to celebrate the 250th as well as the official start of the ‘26-27 waterfowl season. Time to get to work…..
